Resting with Gods, or a Primer to Surviving Isolation as a Polytheist

In a land of plague and a time of hand sanitizer, the sanity of the witchy community rests on the shoulders of a novel idea. It’s name… talking to one another. Or - failing that - talking with our gods and spirits. For years, when times have been rough, monotheists and polytheists alike have turned to prayer. Sometimes those prayers are for an end to our time of suffering, while other times they’re just for guidance to help us through our personal problems. In this conversation, Lee and Ada talk about the things we’re doing spiritually to get us through these difficult times.

Ada: I really love the title you came up with for this Root and Stem: Resting with the Gods. Just resting with the Gods is something I’ve been doing a lot lately. How about you?

Lee: Yes, very much me too. For the first two weeks or so of quarantine where I am, I was home alone with a lot of animals. (A lot of animals.) While I won’t lie, I do talk to them, sometimes you need to know that there’s someone around - and not just online - who I can hold a conversation, with as it were. Bonus points for someone who can’t carry you know what or cough on me.

Ada: One of the great blessings in all of this is that Eris can’t cough on anyone. As far as we know. Maybe that’s how all this started. Eris coughed.

In all seriousness, though, I can only imagine what it must have been like to be alone in the early days when we knew even less about what’s going on. (Not that we know that much as of April 2nd.) I don’t live with two of my partners, and being separated from them has been hard enough.

Lee: I can only imagine what state I’d be in if the partner that I live with had been offshore any longer than he was...

Ada: Who have you found yourself turning to the most for comfort?

Lee: Honestly, it has to be the witchy community as a whole. I’ve also been trying to reconnect with friends from back home in Scotland that I’ve not talked to for a while, which has been surprisingly nice. I don’t know if I’ve sought comfort from people because I’m the kind of person who doesn’t like to talk about my feelings unless I trust you, but I’ve found starting up strange little conversations with people online has been a real sanity-saver for the last month.
